Woolroom organic washable mattress protector review

Wool is weird isn’t it?

It keeps you warm when it’s cold; but it can cool you down if you’re hot.

I can’t get my head around that. But the people at Woolroom can.

In fact, they make it their business (in bedding) to understand wool inside out and to maximise this material’s magic, providing luxurious mattresses and bedlinen that put the sheep into sleep.

They’re also a company of firsts: not only are they the UK’s first bedding retailer to provide traceable and sustainable wool across all its mattresses and bedding collections, but also the first in the world to come up with Washable Organic Wool Bedding that’s Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified – after years of research and development.

(To be classed as organic, wool must come from sheep that are reared, fed, sheltered and transported under standards, which prioritise their welfare and wellbeing. They’re free to pursue their natural behaviour with plenty of space outside and a truly free range life).

Organic wool is also minimally processed – so you can expect it to be free from harmful or suspect chemicals.

I was gifted an Organic Washable mattress protector from the range to try out.

A super-soft, almost satiny-feel unbleached organic cotton outer cover is filled with 100% organic wool from British farmers. It fitted easily onto the mattress – no pulling and tugging required – as it has a generous 45cm deep elasticated skirt to fit the deepest of mattresses.

Soft and comfy to lie on, it also did its job of regulating body temperature. I slept soundly through the heatwave. And now the weather’s turning (and I’m waiting for as long as humanly possible before turning on the central heating in our often-chilly 1880s house) it’s helping to keep us warm and cosy.

It also does its job of protecting the mattress of course – and it washes well in the machine without any felting or shrinking.

Woolroom products don’t come cheap. But that’s because they cut no corners and only use the highest quality wool from the backs of sheep that are truly well cared for, and from farmers they ensure are paid fairly. And everything they make is designed to last and last.

The organic washable mattress protectors cost from £118.99. You can find out more about the Organic Washable Collection here
